Is kratom addictive?

Even though kratom is not as harmful or addictive as prescription painkillers, there is still a chance to become dependant on kratom. Read more to learn how to use kratom in a sensible way.

Most people that use kratom recreationally probably won’t ever have to deal with addiction or withdrawals. People who use it to treat depression, chronic pain and lethargy though, will have a higher chance of becoming dependent to kratom. When you’re dependent on kratom you could experience some discomfort after abstaining from the substance for prolonged periods of time.

Some of these withdrawal symptoms could be:

  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Muscle aches and cramping
  • Cravings for food
  • Fatigue and insomnia
  • Sweating and hot flushes
  • Nauseous feeling
  • Diarrhea
  • A runny nose combined with watery eyes
  • General flu-like complaints

Not everyone is susceptible for the withdrawal symptoms associated with kratom deficiency.

Long time kratom users will mostly experience the most withdrawal symptoms listed above. While some long time users can quit kratom and not feel anything it’s rarely that this happens. People who use kratom for recreational use will barely notice any withdrawal symptoms. This is still personal bound, so one person can have no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever. While someone else will have more of the withdrawal symptoms.

To prevent addiction from kratom you should only take kratom 3 times every week. Setting strict days every week where you can use kratom is a first step of preventing addiction. The second step is to never use kratom for work related issues of any kind or other problems. After doing this once you will start to do it more and more and it will become normale for you. Step 3 is to make sure only recreational use is the reason you are using kratom. I can not stress this enough, using kratom for work, problems or pain will lead to addiction. It will slowly creep in and stay there.

Kratom is a plant that might be addictive for humans and that can be a con for some people. Since kratom has no real known damaging consequences it is not that bad to be addicted to it. Just make sure your normal life isn’t suffering because of an addiction. Some people start eating less and less to take kratom on an empty stomach or have to wait to go somewhere because they need to take kratom on time. This will impact your daily routine and nobody likes that. So unless you really need it for that pain treatment or another reason, we recommend to only use it recreational a few times a week.
